Sorry, but I will be away between July 6 and July 10. So there will be no AMO/TT session on Monday July 6 at Curtin or Wednesday July 8 at UWA.
Sessions will be back to normal the following week. Recently we have been looking at Senior Contest and AIMO questions, since the next main competition is the Senior Contest which is on Tuesday 11 August.
The AMC (Australian Mathematics Competition) is almost 2 weeks before on Thursday 30 July. We could devote some time when we reconvene to looking at questions from past AMCs as well, since some of you will get a `free invitation' via that to do the AIMO on Tuesday 8 September. (Of course, I want all of you who are Year 10 or younger to do the AIMO ... so if you are not sure you will be sitting it, please get me to ensure you will be invited to sit it, when we get closer to that event.)
As I've mentioned to a number of you many times, our main goal is to get at least some of you invited to the School of Excellence in December. To be invited as juniors typically requires:
For Year 10: 29+ in AIMO (really hard), or 19+ in SMC (a little easier)
For up to Year 9: 25+ in AIMO
These numbers mean that I tend to want Year 10 students to do the SMC if they are to have any chance of making the School of Excellence.
Since the usual course to IMO selection is 2 SoEs as Juniors and 4 SoEs as Seniors, if a student misses selection as a Junior in Year 10, it's nearly one's last chance of being invited to an SoE at Year 10. Year 9s can afford to wait a year.
I need to let the AMT know of invitations to sit the Senior Contest by 17 July. So if you didn't do or didn't do particularly well in the last TT you will need to make a case before 17 July as why I should invite you.
Generally Year 12 students are not invited to sit the Senior Contest, but if the couple in this group want to sit it, it can be organised, but your result won't be made official, i.e. sent on to the Australian Maths Trust.
