Mathematical Olympiads: Email of 2021-01-31-new

[AMO/TT] Regular sessions for new students now start week starting 8 Feb

Due to the lockdown there will be no Maths Olympiad training sessions this week. So the suggestion to new students that they could start coming to the regular training sessions from Wednesday, if their choice of venue is UWA, is suspended until next week. I've listed the Perth Modern sessions to be in AU 20. They may actually be in AU 19 (next door).

Since students doing the AMO will still be sitting it on Wednesday 3 February and Thursday 4 February, as long as the lockdown is lifted as expected on Friday 5 February, all new students will be welcome at the regular training sessions, from the week starting Monday 8 February, either

• at Perth Modern School, these are in AU20 (Andrews Upper 20) on Mondays 3:45-5:45pm,
  or,
• at UWA, sessions are usually in Blakers Lecture Theatre on Wednesdays 5:00-7:00pm.
  When not in Blakers, we are in Robert Street Lecture Theatre (and a notice will be left on the door of Blakers LT).

In the meantime, these are some problems you should try:

• Ex Set 4 Q7.
  Hint: after using Factor Th. twice you should have 2 equations, with 3 unknowns a, b, c. Explain why you can do a w.l.o.g. a = 1, and continue from there.
• Ex Set 5 Q3.
• Ex Set 5 Q4.
  Hint: the trick is to write as difference of squares as one of your steps.
