Some new students did come last Wednesday at UWA, and they were welcome to do so, since many of the regulars were involved with the AMO that day (for 4 hours). Directions and timings and other details are at the Olympiad site:
https://staffhome.ecm.uwa.edu.au/~00021149/Olympiad/
and, as will always be the case, this email is blogged there by date in
YYYY-MM-DD format.
Firstly, Wednesdays at UWA or Mondays at Perth Modern School is a choice. They are intended to be parallel sessions, i.e. their content is roughly the same ... so you only need to come to one each week.
Secondly, since it's always awkward trying to negotiate around holidays, I just don't recognise them. The sessions are on, every week, regardless of holidays, unless I send an email to say otherwise. At UWA, I have bookings all the way up to the Wednesday before Christmas.
Of course, your family may have holidays. That's ok. No problem. The idea of having sessions each week, is that missing one every now and then shouldn't make too much difference.
At UWA, there is a slight hiccup: if you are over 16, you are required to be double-vaccinated, and you should have proof, in case you are challenged. A COVID certificate is relatively easily obtained. Your parents have probably organised this for you, already, by first going to https://my.gov.au/, creating an account by providing an email address and mobile phone no., installing a few identifying answers to challenge questions, and then uploading Medicare card details (takes about 20 minutes). So now here are details of the sessions:
Blakers LT directionsIt's advisable to come to Blakers LT anyway, since, if it happens that the venue is avaialble anyway, we will use that instead. Blakers LT is preferred over Perth Modern since there is more space, and it's better acoustically.

Where necessary, theory needed for the problems will be explained. I will encourage new students to watch some i-lectures from time to time, so that I don't have to explain theory that the regular attendees already know. The next session will be on Euclidean Algorithm. i So looking at theory on that topic for Chapter 7, and exercises Ex Set 7 Q1-6, would be useful.
